3D Scanning

3D scanning technology generates a large quantity of points, referred to as a point cloud, of the surface of an object. These points are used to determine the shape of the object, and can then be used to create a 3D model of an existing part. This is valuable when a solid model or drawings of the part do not exist. Using appropriate software the 3D scan can be transformed into a feature-based solid model, which can be edited with solid modeling programs.
