Creating 3D Component Models from Existing Parts

Quad City Manufacturing Laboratory (QCML) offers 3D scanning services for manufacturers in need of expert 3D design capabilities and assistance with reverse engineering of legacy components.

3D scanning technology works by generating a large quantity of points, referred to as a point cloud, of the surface of an object. These points are used to determine the surfaces of the object, which then can be used to create an accurate 3D model of an existing part – a valuable feature when solid models or drawings of the part do not exist. When used with the appropriate software, 3D scans can be transformed into feature-based solid models, which can then be edited and used for prototyping a working part or in production.
