Creating 3D Component Models from Existing Parts
Quad City Manufacturing Laboratory (QCML) offers 3D scanning services for manufacturers in need of expert 3D design capabilities and assistance with reverse engineering of legacy components.
3D scanning technology works by generating a large quantity of points, referred to as a point cloud, of the surface of an object. These points are used to determine the surfaces of the object, which then can be used to create an accurate 3D model of an existing part – a valuable feature when solid models or drawings of the part do not exist. When used with the appropriate software, 3D scans can be transformed into feature-based solid models, which can then be edited and used for prototyping a working part or in production.
QCML 3D Scanning Capabilities
3D scanning from QCML allows 3D models to be created from existing parts when no models, drawings, or part specifications exist. Manufacturers are afforded the ability to efficiently generate solid models of existing parts for reverse engineering, prototyping, and production.
Our 3D scanning capabilities support a wide range of industries, including:
- General Manufacturing
3D models created from 3D scans can be used to feed computational analyses, reverse engineer legacy components or even provide production instructions to 3D printers.
